Foreign Office issues Florida travel warning as Hurricane Dorian approaches

A travel warning has been issued for the United States as a storm hurtles towards the Southeast coast.

The Foreign Office say that Hurricane Dorian is tracking its way across the Tropical Atlantic and is expected to hit the area early on Monday September 2.

The storm will hit central Florida, which is popular with British families over the summer period, and has already been put into a state of emergency as the US National Hurricane Center says that as the storm travels from the north of Puerto Rico it will strengthen.

They predict that Dorian will reach Category 3 Hurricane strength before weakening with high winds and rainfall from intense thunderstorms to be expected.

Advice for those visiting the Southeast coast, including Walt Disney World, in the next week from the Foreign Office says that you should monitor the progress of approaching storms on the US National Hurricane Center website .

It has also said to follow instructions issued by the local authorities, including any evacuation orders.

Disney World's guest service account also told one user on Twitter: "We also encourage you to keep checking local weather reports and our website for the most up-to-date information."

In advance of Dorian's arrival, Universal Orlando tweeted: "At this time, our park operations and hours are continuing as normal. Our social media channels will post any updates."

And Disney Cruise Line added: "We are closely monitoring the path and progress of Hurricane Dorian to ensure our guests enjoy safe and comfortable cruises, and to make certain our ships steer clear of the storm.

"The safety of our Guests and crew is always our foremost concern.

"At this time, based on the current predicted storm timing and path, we do not anticipate any changes to the Disney Fantasy sailing on Saturday, August 31.

"We are closely monitoring potential implications for the Disney Dream sailings on Friday, August 30 and Monday, September 2."

So far, Hurricane Dorian has passed through most of the Caribbean without causing any major damage.

The National Hurricane Center said that maximum sustained winds neared 85mph.
