Foreign holidays joy with Spain to introduce jab certificates 'by June at latest'

Spain expects digital vaccine certificates for EU nations will be ready in June at the latest as the country prepares to open its borders ahead of the peak summer holiday season.

Foreign minister Arancha Gonzalez Laya said it is hoped that other countries, which are non-European Union members such as the UK, will also be included in the holiday scheme.

EU leaders agreed last month to work on the certificates to try to kickstart the tourism industry.

Arancha Gonzalez Laya said the scheme would be a good tool for European citizens and "if all goes well, we will have a vaccination certificate in June at the latest".

"If it can be in mid-May, better but not later than June," she added.

The certificates would not prevent those without the jab from travelling, but people who had one would be able to pass through EU borders faster, added Ms Gonzalez Laya.

Other nations such as Greece, Turkey, Cyprus and Malta have already suggested they will welcome British visitors this summer if they have been vaccinated.

After more than 900,000 deaths from coronavirus in Europe, the continent has been plunged into a deep recession, with the tourist trade severely damaged.
