Forecasters reckon snow could be on the way in coming weeks with temperatures to plummet

Weather forecasters reckon snow could be on the way in the coming weeks across the country with temperatures set to plummet.

The remainder of October is likely to be "colder than average" with a chance of winter showers and widespread frost in the next ten days or so.

We're also likely to experience a particularly harsh winter as "weather systems from the Atlantic clash with cold stagnated air over the UK".

Exacta Weather forecaster James Madden said: "October is now looking like it will turn out colder than average, with more chance of something wintery settling in through the second half of the month.

"There is a strong chance of widespread frosts and the chance of snowfall which will set the scene for November.

"This will pave the way for what is shaping up to be a colder than average winter.

"While these could start to make an impact within the next few weeks, they will be particularly troublesome from December onwards.

"The winter is looking favourable to bring snow event after snow event as weather systems from the Atlantic clash with cold stagnated air over the UK."

Parts of Edinburgh and the Lothians have today (Sunday) been experiencing heavy rainfall with Met Office weather warnings in place this morning.

Experts said that flooding could have caused travel disruption and flooding in places.
