What the Met Office says about reports of heavy snow and icy temperatures in January

After a milder-than-usual December the weather looks set to change as we go into 2020 , with forecasters warning of a drastic drop in temperature and possible snow showers on the way.

Freezing conditions are set to hit in the coming days, with central and southern parts of England and Wales dipping down to zero degrees.

What is more, heavy snow showers are also predicted, with the white stuff first set to fall across Scotland before moving across Wales and England come mid-January.

According to some weather watchers, such as WXCHARTS, some parts of the UK could even see downfalls of up to 14cm in the next fortnight.

Once again, it's Scotland that'll get hit first with wintery storms gradually heading south from around January 12 onwards.

However, the Met Office has come up with a more cautious approach.

It said the wintery storms could start out as heavy rain, with showers then turning into snow across higher ground.

A spokesman said: "Spells of heavy rain and strong winds look most likely across northern and western parts. These could be interspersed by more showery interludes where some snow could fall over higher ground.

"The best of any drier and brighter conditions appear most likely across the east and southeast. There is still a chance for some rain here at times.

"Temperatures look to be above average across the north with the potential for some colder spells.

"Further south, temperatures should be be around normal for the time of year but may be rather cold at times."
