Forecasters issue update on when thunderstorms could hit Nottinghamshire after heatwave

Forecasters have issued an updated weather warning, after suggesting the parts of Nottinghamshire could be hit by stormy weather today (June 25).

The new warning no longer covers Nottinghamshire, instead stretching across the south-east of the country and areas including Portsmouth, Brighton, Bath and Plymouth, extending to Wales and stretching to Scotland.

In place from 4pm on Thursday to 9am the following day, forecasters said there was a small chance that homes and businesses could be flooded quickly, with damage to some buildings from floodwater, lightning strikes, hail or strong winds.

A thunder warning is still in place for Nottinghamshire for Friday and Saturday.

The widespread yellow warning is from 12pm on Friday, June 26, until 6am the following day

The warning comes during a mini-heatwave, whereby temperatures were expected to reach 31C in the city on Wednesday (June 24), making it the warmest day of the year so far.

Meanwhile, for the same day forecasters predicted highs of 30C for Mansfield as late as 6pm, matching temperatures in Morocco, Barcelona and even Barbados.

The warning comes a week after torrential downpours battered Nottinghamshire, leading to the Royal Mail centre in Padge Road, Beeston, being evacuated, Beeston's Tesco Extra being flooded - while devastating lightning ripped through a family's home in Sandiacre.
