Forecasters in flood warning as heavy rain gets set to batter Scotland

Scotland is set to be battered by another round of heavy rain showers as forecasters issue a yellow weather warning.

The Met Office has issued the alert for rain in large parts of Scotland between 1pm and 9pm on Tuesday.

Experts anticipate around 50mm of persistent rain could soak areas in just a three hour period.

Central, Tayside and Fife, the Highlands, south west Scotland, Lothian Borders and Strathclyde could see the worst of conditions.

Forecasters have warned of further flooding, which could result in power cuts and significant disruption to public transport services.

It is understood the showers will ease during Tuesday evening.

A spokesperson for the Met Office said: “Heavy showers are expected to develop on Tuesday afternoon.

The news comes less than a week since large parts of the country woke up to 'biblical' flash flooding following a period of sustained heavy rainfall (PA)

“Whilst most places will miss the worst, some showers could be slow moving and there is a chance of that 20-25 mm of rain might fall in an hour with perhaps 50 mm in 3 hours.

“The showers will ease during Tuesday evening.”

The new warning comes less than a week since large parts of eastern Scotland were severely impacted by huge thunderstorms.

Areas such as Perth, Fife and Edinburgh saw ‘biblical’ floods after heavy rain fall caused chaos across the country.
