Forecasters give latest prediction on heatwave coming to UK this month

July may have started with typical British summer conditions of heavy rain and thunder, but hotter weather and sunny days look to be on the way.

The end of July and heading into August looks to be much hotter, weather experts have said.

Temperatures are likely to be "above average" during the end of the month as schools break up and many enjoy the summer holidays.

The Met Office has said there is still a small chance of thunderstorms across the country.

Giving its long range forecast between July 23 and August 6, the Met Office said: "For the rest of July and into early August, conditions are most likely to be warmer and drier than average. Some spells of unsettled weather are still possible, especially in the northwest of the UK, but overall most areas should have a good deal of fine and dry weather.

"There is a small chance of a few thunderstorms, especially across southern and eastern areas. Temperatures are likely to be above average, with the south possibly feeling very warm or hot at times."

Here's the outlook for the region for the next few days from the Met Office:

Today (July 9):

A sunny start across the region with cloud slowly building during the morning. Showers likely during the afternoon, turning heavy at times, particularly across Lincolnshire. Maximum temperature 24 °C.

Tonight:

Any showers will fade away early this evening leaving a mainly dry night with intermittent cloud. Becoming cloudier during the early hours of the morning with showers in the south. Minimum temperature 15 °C.

Saturday:

Showers will continue to develop across the region on Saturday, slow moving and heavy at times with a low risk of thunder. Showers fading away in the evening, clear overnight. Maximum temperature 22 °C.

Outlook for Sunday to Tuesday:

An unsettled outlook with heavy showers developing on Sunday and Monday, possibly with thunder. Light showers on Tuesday, cloudy with rain along the east coast.
