Forecaster Tom Skilling taking leave from WGN to undergo surgery

WGN meteorologist Tom Skilling announced Saturday he’ll step away from the weather center for several weeks to undergo gastric bypass surgery.

He’ll be on air Monday before taking leave for four to six weeks, the beloved local forecaster said in a Facebook post.

“I hate missing work,” wrote Skilling, who has been a meteorologist with WGN for more than 40 years. “Suddenly you’re not there — and you leave those who follow your work wondering ‘Where is he? Where did he go?’ I didn’t want anyone wondering for a minute what’s going on without a heads up and some kind of explanation of what’s happening.”

Gastric bypass surgery is a procedure to help with weight loss. Skilling said in his post that he’s been preparing for the surgery for the past six months.

His co-workers will fill in for him until he returns later in March or April, Skilling said.
