Forecast: Thunderstorms to continue Thursday

June 25--Thunderstorms are expected to affect Chicagoland and heavy rains could cause flooding for portions of central Illinois on Thursday, forecasters say.

About 4 a.m. Thursday, the National Weather Service canceled a flash flood watch for the Chicago area. That watch was initially set to last through Thursday afternoon.

Thunderstorms are likely to continue Thursday morning mainly south of Interstate 88, according to the weather service. Some flooding south of Interstate 80 could result from heavy rains in the morning, forecasters say. Temperatures will reach into the mid-70s Thursday before dipping to the low 60s Thursday night.

The weather service has issued a flash flood watch for portions of north-central, central and west-central Illinois until 1 p.m. Thursday. Forecasters predict a total rainfall of more than an inch in the area and say the rainfall may produce flash flooding because of already saturated ground in the area.

The rain has caused more headaches for residents of places like Kankakee. Heavy rains overnight and Thursday morning have contributed to ongoing flooding of the Kankakee River.

A flood warning continues for several rivers around the central Illinois area until late Friday night. The affected rivers include the Kankakee, Iroquis and Mazon, according to the National Weather Service.

Forecasters encourage residents in the affected areas to monitor updates on the weather.
