Ford recalls Ranger and Everest models from Irish market due to potentially killer fault

Ford Ireland has issued a recall on two of its models due to a potentially fatal airbag fault.

Just under 1,000 Ford Ranger and Ford Everest vehicles are subject to the caution, as part of a worldwide Takata airbag recall.

The cars, which were made between February 2004 and September 2014, were fitted with the airbag.

A statement explained: "Takata airbags fitted to some Ranger and Everest vehicles contain an inflator propellant that, in some inflators, may experience a material alteration over time.

"This issue could create excessive internal pressure when the airbag is deployed which could result in the body of the inflator rupturing and metal fragments entering the passenger compartment, potentially causing severe injury or death to the vehicle occupants.

"There are 949 affected vehicles on the Irish market."

The Competition and Consumer Protection Commission statement added: "Ford Ireland will contact all affected owners and make the necessary arrangements for works to be completed on the affected vehicles. You can contact Ford Ireland on 1800 771199."

The alert comes just under a week after BMW Ireland also recalled two models due to the same safety issue.

The car giant carried out a recall on its 3-Series and 5-Series models manufactured between April 7, 1999 and December 10, 2003.

It's understood there are 194 affected vehicles in Ireland.

A spokeswoman told the Irish Mirror: "This action relates to the worldwide and already well-publicised Takata airbag recall. Affected owners will receive a letter from BMW Ireland inviting them to contact their local BMW retailer for the work to be carried out.

"If a customer believes that their vehicle may have been impacted by this recall, then they can contact BMW’s customer care on 1890 719 421 or by email;  customerservice@bmw.ie .

"There is also a useful tool on  https://www.bmwservice.ie/  that allows customers to enter their vehicle registration to the search engine to check if there are any outstanding campaigns affecting their vehicle."
