Ford admits a deadly fault after a botched fix left 255,000 cars unsafe

Ford has initiated a significant recall affecting over 250,000 vehicles, primarily due to a persistent issue that can cause engines to stall unexpectedly while driving.

This new action addresses a problem that was not adequately resolved in a previous recall.

The recall encompasses 255,404 Ford Focus models manufactured between 2012 and 2018.

The core issue stems from a malfunctioning canister purge valve, which can cause sudden engine stalls, increasing the risk of crashes and injuries.

To rectify the defect, Ford dealers will provide a complimentary powertrain software update to affected vehicles. Owners can expect to receive notification letters by mail around July 6.

For additional information, customers may contact Ford customer service directly at 1-866-436-7332, referencing recall number 26S40.

Vehicle identification numbers for affected cars will become searchable on NHTSA.gov starting July 6, under the National Highway Traffic and Safety Administration's recall number 26V369, which supersedes the original 18V735.
