Ford leapfrogs Nissan in local market

Ford Thailand announced its sales performance increased by 28% to 32,677 vehicles in the first half, helping drive its overall market share up 0.5% from the same period last year to 6.7%.

Ford moved up from sixth place to fifth in the Thai market, leapfrogging Nissan.

The company reported its second-quarter sales rose 23% year-on-year to 15,442 vehicles on the continuing strength of demand for its Ranger pickup and mid-sized Everest sport utility vehicle (SUV).

Sales of the Ranger jumped 36% year-on-year during the second quarter to 13,256 vehicles. Year-to-date Ranger sales have also risen 36% to 27,455 vehicles.

The Ranger continues to outperform in the pickup segment this year, adding 1.5 percentage points of share year-to-date versus the same period last year to 13.2%.

The Everest contributed to Ford's second-quarter total with sales increasing 2% from a year ago to 1,925 vehicles.

Year-to-date Everest sales have increased 22% to 4,455 vehicles, helping drive its own segment share for the second quarter up two percentage points from a year ago to 14.8% for pickup-based SUVs.

"The continuing growth in popularity of the Ranger and Everest reflects the ongoing strength of the pickup segment and increasing consumer shift towards utility vehicles, which certainly play to our global strengths," said Yukontorn Wisadkosin, president of Ford Asean.

"We expect demand for these two nameplates will continue to rise throughout the second half of the year as we prepare to launch new models of both Ranger and Everest, and start customer deliveries of the Ranger Raptor."

Last week Ford announced the start of production for the Ranger Raptor, with deliveries starting next month.
