Ford is top of the pre-loved car charts

THE Ford Fiesta dominated as the best-selling used car in 2019 – and marked its fifth year as the UK’s No1 favourite with second-hand motor buyers.

Second place went to the Vauxhall Corsa, which is still the preferred choice of buyers in Scotland. In third spot was the Ford Focus, closely followed by the Vauxhall Astra in fourth and Nissan Qashqai in fifth.

Sixth position went to the Mercedes-Benz C-Class and the German brand made it a double with its A-Class hatch in seventh. The Vauxhall Mokka settled for eighth, while the Fiat 500 was ninth best-seller in the used car market and the Volkswagen Polo rounded out the top 10.

The Ford Fiesta may be the most popular car with buyers, but it could only manage ninth position for the fastest-selling pre-loved cars.

Top honours for that go to the Hyundai Tucson for the second year running, as this SUV spent the shortest amount of time between being advertised and successfully being sold. Volkswagen’s Polo was the second-quickest seller, followed by the BMW 1 Series, Ford EcoSport and Kia Sportage.

There was more good news for Ford, though, as it retained its place as the most popular brand with used car buyers in 2019, with Vauxhall hot on its heels.

More surprisingly, the research by AA Cars found Mercedes was the third top-selling make, edging Volkswagen into fourth and followed by Audi in fifth spot.

James Fairclough, chief executive of AA Cars, said: “Drivers are spoiled for choice in the used car market, and the new entrants in the top 10 fastest-selling car list are a great indication of the diversity of vehicles on offer.

“The market is catering to all budgets and requests, with two Mercedes models in the best-selling lists, sitting alongside some relatively new makes and models that were only introduced in the past six or seven years, such as the Vauxhall Mokka.”

Cars such as the Mokka and Mercedes A-Class show used buyers are keen on newer models but are happy to avoid the cost of a new car.

Mr Fairclough added: “Sales have been boosted by the availability of car finance in the used car market, which has made it easier for drivers to upgrade to these nearly-new models.

“Some cars are selling in a very short period of time, but it’s important for buyers not to rush in before checking the car properly for peace of mind.”
