The playing field inside Ford Field might look a little different in 2019. The owners of the stadium, the Detroit-Wayne County Stadium Authority, revealed in their latest meeting minutes that the turf inside Ford Field will be replaced for the 2019 NFL season.
“We are considering — we are starting the process to replace the field turf that’s on the field, so we are researching all the different companies that are out there right now. Our turf is the second-oldest turf of artificial fields in the NFL. It was installed in 2013. So we will likely be replacing that as part of our off season in 2019,” said Todd Argust, the Lions’ vice president of operations via Crain’s Detroit.
Also in the meeting minutes is a discussion about a potential MLS franchise for Detroit, one which would require Ford Field to be retrofitted with a retractable roof. Based on the report from Crain’s Bill Shea, the stadium authority has determined the cost of doing that is prohibitive.
