Jan. 31--The showstopper is coming to Chicago.
Ford officially announced the GT supercar will grace the 2015 Chicago Auto Show. Last produced in 2006, the prodigal supercar roared back to life at Joe Louis Arena during the 2015 North American International Auto Show in Detroit in January.
"If you could use innovation to build the ultimate Ford performance vehicle, what would it be?" Ford's CEO Mark Fields teased the crowd. "Well, here's an idea."
The mid-engine supercar gets a 3.5-liter twin-turbo V-6 powertrain that makes more than 600 horsepower, all wrapped in lightweight carbon fiber. Ford didn't disclose the weight but said it would have the best power-to-weight ratio of any performance car. The stunning car has center-mounted twin tailpipes in a wide, long body that is the stuff of poster pin-ups. Scissor doors open up to let in two people, who will be as close to the ground as the Le Mans-inspired race car allows.
Limited production run is expected, and the sticker should be in the $200,000 range. It's expected to become available to the select few in 2016. Used 2005 and 2006 models range from the mid-$200s to over half a million.
The most talked about and gawked about debut of 2015 will be a shell of itself at Chicago, but that should be enough to impress most show goers.
