Force Majeure, Cobain: Montage Of Heck, John Wick: this week’s new films

Force Majeure (15)
(Ruben Ostlund, 2014, Swe/Fra/Nor/Den) Johannes Kuhnke, Lisa Loven Kongsli. 119 mins

Not recommended for unstable couples or après-ski recreation, this penetrating Swedish movie unpicks the perfect family holiday, and much of modern civilisation with it. A “controlled avalanche” at a ski resort triggers disaster of a more psychological nature, and the aftershocks resonate through this pristine alpine drama.

Cobain: Montage Of Heck (15)
(Brett Morgen, 2015, US) 132 mins

What ought to be final word on Cobain’s legend, with personal recordings, archive footage, animation and insider access.

John Wick (15)
(Chad Stahelski, David Leitch, 2014, US) Keanu Reeves, Michael Nyqvist, Alfie Allen. 101 mins

Good to see Keanu back in action – unless you’re one of the countless baddies he wastes in this minimal, violent revenge thriller.

Woman In Gold (12A)
(Simon Curtis, 2015, US/UK) Helen Mirren, Ryan Reynolds. 109 mins

A fact-based but stodgily sentimental account of a spirited Jewish woman’s battle to retrieve a Nazi-looted Klimt painting.

The Duff (12A)
(Ari Sandel, 2015, US) Mae Whitman, Bella Thorne, Robbie Amell. 101 mins

The “designated ugly fat friend” sounds like a convenient fabrication, but it still makes for a passable high-school comedy.

Lost River (15)
(Ryan Gosling, 2014, US) Iain De Caestecker, Christina Hendricks. 93 mins

Gosling’s experimental debut wallows in a stylised demi-monde of urban decay, in which a mother and son try to get by.

Jauja (15)
(Lisandro Alonso, 2014, Arg/Den/Fra/Mex/US/Ger/Bra/Neth) Viggo Mortensen, Ghita Nørby. 108 mins

Beguiling western following a Danish soldier in 19th century Patagonia.

Drone (15)
(Tonje Hessen Schei, 2014, Nor/Pak/US) 82 mins

Drone-warfare doc looking at perpetrators and victims.

Bypass (15)
(Duane Hopkins, 2014, UK) George MacKay, Benjamin Dilloway, Lara Peake. 105 mins

Brooding study of a petty criminal struggling to stay afloat. Like Hopkins’ Better Things, it’s a snapshot of modern Britain’s margins.

Good Kill (15)
(Andrew Niccol, 2014, US) Ethan Hawke, January Jones, Zoë Kravitz. 100 mins

A wade into the murky ethics of drone warfare, via Hawke’s ex-pilot.

Broken Horses (15)
(Vidhu Vinod Chopra, 2015, US) Anton Yelchin, Chris Marquette, Vincent D’Onofrio. 101 mins

A stumbling US debut for the Bollywood hitmaker, involving a violinist dragged by his brother into familiar criminal dealings on the Mexican border.

Paul Blart: Mall Cop 2 (PG)
(Andy Fickman, 2015, US) Kevin James, Raini Rodriguez. 94 mins

Another slapstick mission for James’s Segway-assisted accidental hero, this time foiling a Vegas hotel heist.

Hot Tub Time Machine 2 (15)
(Steve Pink, 2015, US) Rob Corddry, Craig Robinson, Clark Duke. 93 mins

Sloppy seconds for the silly comedy, failing to raise many new laughs from its repeated time-messing.
