A graphic on exposure to the sun, headlined “Which rays are you catching?” (Observer Tech Monthly, last week, page 12) transposed labels for the epidermis and dermis. It also incorrectly said UVA caused ageing of the skin in the epidermis layer. That is caused by UVB; UVA causes burning, thickening and darkening in the dermis layer of the skin. The same issue of Tech Monthly said designer fashion e-boutique Net-a-Porter had merged with Italian online fashion giant Yoox earlier this year. In fact, the merger is not due to be completed until later this year.
A panel on slavery headlined “The long road to abolition” (In Focus, last week, page 28) contained a typing slip that said that British slave owners received £20m (£1.6bn in today’s money) in compensation after slavery was abolished. As the text of the main piece made clear, £20m in 1834 equates to £16bn today.
The 2012 mayoral referendum in Newcastle was called by the coalition government in 2012, not, as we said in “Powerhouse or poorhouse?”, a Labour government (Business, 5 July, page 40).
