We have been asked to make it clear that a news commentary piece on regional devolution by Professor Paul Salveson (“Time for Yorkshire to start raising its own taxes”, last week, page 9) was mostly drawn from The Case for the North, a survey published by the Campaign for the North and written by several contributors, including Prof Salveson.
“The north hits back at Osborne’s austerity: ‘it’s devolution or bust” (News, last week, page 8) said that Newcastle-upon-Tyne was just 100 miles from the Scottish border. Not so: it’s a mere 46 miles.
“Thirtysomethings flee the capital for the regions” (News, last week, page 14) said Birmingham had four Michelin-starred restaurants – “the most outside the capital”. Almost: Edinburgh just beats that with five.
“Our favourite books of 2014? Well, since you ask, Santa…” (Books, last week, page 40) included a recommendation for Bombay Stories by Saadat Hasan Manto, saying he led a decadent life behind the scenes in the Indian film business in the 1950s. He actually worked in the film industry in the 1930s and moved to Pakistan in 1948, where he died in 1955.
