“Six-wicket hero Stuart Broad lays waste to South Africa” announced a headline on page 1 last week. As our style guide explains, a hurricane can lay waste an island, or lay an island waste, but it does not lay it to waste or lay waste to it (the word comes from the same root as devastate).
Correction to a correction: hypothyroidism is treated with thyroxine replacement, not hyperthyroidism, a condition that produces too much thyroxine. (For the Record, last week, page 42).
