“The gig economy is here to stay. So making it fairer must be a priority”, (Comment, last week, page 34) discussed a new report from the Joseph Rowntree Foundation entitled UK Poverty: Causes, Costs and Solutions and criticised it for its “glaring omission” in not mentioning trade unions. In fact, both the executive summary and the 370-page main report make several references to trade unions.
Contrary to an editorial, Colombia’s campaign to gain independence from Spain began with a riot in Bogatá on 20 July 1810 (the date the nation now marks as its independence day) and was completed on 10 August 1819, when Simón BolÍvar’s forces finally liberated what was then called New Granada (“Colombia’s deal offers model of peace for world”, Comment, 28 August, page 32). We mistakenly said the country had gained independence in 1891.
