An interview with Geena Davis (“My plan to beat sexism in the movies”, New Review, page 8) attributed certain research to the Geena Davis Institute and the Centre for the Study of Women in Television and Film. It was actually carried out by Dr Stacy Smith at USC Annenberg.
A technical glitch in the production process obliterated the clue for 19 Across in the Everyman crossword 3599 (New Review, last week, page 47). It should have read: “Pompous man is left rambling about wine (4-9)”.
“Forget shops: it’s all about the blockbuster exhibition” (Observer Magazine, 20 September, page 30) referred to an Yves St Laurent exhibition at “Castle Barnard”. The Bowes Museum (where the exhibition is being held) is in Barnard Castle, County Durham.
A letter, “Heading off the tracks” (Comment, 20 September, page 44), said that the Liverpool and Manchester was the world’s first passenger-carrying railway. A reader reminds us that the first to carry passengers was the Stockton and Darlington Railway (Swansea and Mumbles Railway also claims this distinction). The Liverpool and Manchester was the first intercity designated passenger railway.
