'For the Love of Spock' documentary remembers Leonard Nimoy of 'Star Trek'

April 13--A little over a year ago, Leonard Nimoy, the actor known for his iconic "Star Trek" role as Spock, died.

His son Adam committed at the time to making a documentary to chronicle his father's impact. Ahead of the debut of the film, "For the Love of Spock," on Saturday at the Tribeca Film Festival, a trailer was released highlighting what audiences can expect.

"For the Love of Spock," which raised over $662,000 in funding on Kickstarter last year, features a number of interviews that Adam Nimoy conducted with "Star Trek" cast and crew. Some of the people include original series alums William Shatner and George Takei as well as folks from the new movie franchise such as Simon Pegg and Zach Quinto. Quinto also narrates the documentary.

In an interview with Nimoy at the "Star Trek" convention five months after his father's death, he told The Times about his goal: to make the definitive film about Spock. It's a character, he said, that was perfect for his dad, who also was an outsider trying to fit in.

"My father nailed that role because it was him, the son of Orthodox Jewish immigrants hoping to assimilate and get a career in Hollywood," Nimoy said. Also: "He was a numbers guy."

Nimoy is no rookie working on this documentary. He's an accomplished television director, with credits ranging from "NYPD Blue" to "Gilmore Girls" to "Babylon 5" to -- yes -- two episodes of "Star Trek: The Next Generation."

Following the film's Tribeca premiere, it will be made available for online streaming.
