Oklahoma quarterback Baker Mayfield won't start Saturday's regular-season finale against West Virginia, Sooners coach Lincoln Riley announced Monday.
Mayfield won't be a team captain either, Riley said during an emotional press conference announcement Monday morning. Mayfield was spotted grabbing his crotch and yelling an obscene comment toward Kansas players during the Sooners win on Saturday.
"This decision was difficult for a lot of reasons," Riley said. "They're not adults yet. They're still learning, they're still in that phase where you're going to make mistakes and the important thing is that you learn from them and grow from them. I think what we're setting forward here is going to provide Baker an opportunity to do that. I know it's certainly something that's going to get his attention."
Riley got emotional when describing Mayfield, who is second in the nation with 3,816 passing yards. Mayfield is a top candidate to win the Heisman trophy.
"I don't know if I'll ever have a player who is as special to me as he is," said Riley, who began to sob. "We've been through a lot together. He's a tremendous teammate, he's the best football player in America. He's got a great heart that most people don't get a chance to see like I do and I'm damn proud to be his coach."
