For Hispanic Heritage Month, Thunder join OKC Latina school supply drive

To celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month, the Oklahoma City Thunder partnered with OKC Latina for a school supply drive for Hispanic teachers in the city.

Fifty boxes were filled with school supplies off teachers’ wish lists. An assembly line made of volunteers from OKC Latina and the Thunder teamed up to put them together.

Items included markers, pencils, notebooks, folders, hand sanitizer, masks, sanitizing wipes and tissues.

Many schools in the area will soon be returning to in-person teaching. The Oklahoma City Public Schools district is scheduled to begin Oct. 19, according to the Oklahoman, though there could be delays.

“Partnering with OG&E to support this school supply drive with OKC Latina is another way we can put a spotlight on the Hispanic community and support teachers during Hispanic Heritage Month,” vice president of Community Relations for the Thunder Christine Berney said in a statement.

“We hope these boxes make the transition back to in-person learning easier for both these wonderful educators as well as the students.”
