For DSPs, SHOs, time to lose sight of their blue-eyed boys

CHANDIGARH: For some cops, time has come to see off their blue-eyed boys.

Seeing red over a practice causing staff crunch in police stations and hampering daily work and even investigation in some instances, superintendent of police (headquarters) Manoj Kumar Meena has ordered all deputy superintendents of police (DSPs), station house officers (SHOs) and in-charges of wings to relieve cops temporarily attached with them. In the police department, it is common to take favourite cops along to new postings without them being transferred.

“DSPs, SHOs and In-charge of police units are in the habit of taking police personnel attached with them in a particular unit on temporary basis to their new place of postings as and when they are transferred by just writing a daily diary report. This practice is not appreciated in the light of transparency in the transfer policy,” the order said.

The SP directed DSPs, SHO inspectors and in-charges to relieve such officials without any further delay, pointing out non-compliance would be viewed seriously.

“As this irregular practice came to our notice, we directed all officials to stop it and relieve such cops in a week,” the SP said.

Sources said two-three cops have always been attached with a few DSPs, SHOs and former in-charges of crime branch and operation cell for the last many years. “Some inspectors always take men close to them wherever they get posted,” they added. Many SHOs and in-charges have been running to offices of the DGP and SSP to get their manpower back. “We have to deal with shortage of men. Also, when a new person comes on the seat of a munshi, he takes time to learn the ways to function. This in effect impacts the working and our output,” said a police official.

Another complaint of cops had been that they were not relieved from their existing units several months after their transfer. In October 2021, SP Meena had directed in-charges of units and SHOs to relieve such cops and file a compliance report in 24 hours.
