For Boston’s Vincent Poirier, a chance at Gold beats even an NBA title

For Boston Celtics big man Vincent Poirier, if it comes to choosing between country or team, it’s a no-brainer for the Frenchman.

Speaking in an interview with Konbini Sports’ Abdallah Soidri, Poirier was asked whether an NBA title, or winning a Gold Medal with France in the  2021 Olympics would mean more to him, the 7-foot center was earnest in his reply.

“I [would] take the Olympic title,” came Poirier’s reply (via Euro Hoops’ Antonis Stroggylakis). “French Olympic champions are rare. If I’m one of the 12 players who win the gold at the Olympics, I will be a legend.”

For what it’s worth, Poirier would undoubtedly have a much bigger role — and reason to brag — in a situation that saw him head to the French national team, given he hardly saw the floor in his rookie campaign.

In 2019-20, the Clamart, France native averaged just 5.9 minute per game in 22 regular season appearances, putting up 1.9 points and 2 rebounds per contest.
