For 6 days in a row, Rajasthan receives bountiful rains

JAIPUR: After a few weeks of lull, southwest monsoon gained momentum in the state as many places witnessed moderate to heavy showers for the sixth consecutive day on Sunday.

Jaipur and Ajmer divisions, however, received less rainfall compared to Saturday. Makrana (Nagaur) received 240mm rains, the highest in the state for the day.

Attributing the continued rainfall to easterly winds, Jaipur Met office said from Monday onwards, rainfall activity would be less for some days.

People in Jaipur woke up to a sunny morning after almost five days.

Many places in Kota, Jodhpur and Ajmer divisions received heavy rainfall. In Kota division, teams of the state disaster relief force (SDRF) rescued trapped people and took them to safer places. Many villages got disconnected with the district headquarters because of intensive rain.

Jaipur Met office said for the first 44 days since the inception of monsoon on June 18, the progress of southwest monsoon was very poor. “From Monday onwards, monsoon winds gained momentum and torrential rainfall was witnessed at many places in Kota, Ajmer, Udaipur and Jaipur divisions and other parts of the state. It is expected that in the second week of August, the state will get a bountiful,” said an officer with Jaipur Met office.

In its forecast, weathermen said mild showers were expected in some parts of eastern and western Rajasthan in the next 24 hours.
