Footy world mourns Mike Williamson, commentator of 'Jesaulenko, you beauty' fame

Mike Williamson, the man behind the microphone for some of Australian football's most iconic moments has died, aged 90.

Williamson started as a commentator with Melbourne's Channel Seven in the 1950s and was a feature of football programs for decades to follow.

He called many of the game's biggest moments, including Malcolm Blight's match-winning torpedo punt in 1976 and Barry Breen's point that won St Kilda its only premiership in 1966.

But it's his call of Alex Jesaulenko's mark of the year in the 1970 Carlton vs Collingwood grand final that he was most famous for.

"Oh, Jesaulenko, you beauty!' is fondly remembered by footy lovers.

It has since been used in a number of advertising campaigns, including in TV commercials for beer and cars.

Jesaulenko had recently called for Williamson to be made a member of the Australian Football Hall of Fame.

He worked for Channel Seven's VFL coverage through the late 50s, 60s and 70s and also hosted several television shows including Channel Seven's Penthouse Club.
