Footie team gets showers and community hub boosts security thanks to generous contractor

A family business has help a football team get new showers and boosted security at a community hub.

Electrical and mechanical contractors A Alexander & Son have supported two good causes with help from Engage Renfrewshire, which supports charities and other not-for-profit groups.

The firm, based in Mount Florida in Glasgow, donated a cheque, staff time and and materials worth thousands of pounds to Thorn Athletic AFC, in Johnstone, and Kipco, which is a community hub in Kilbarchan.

Alexander’s have been assisted by Engage Renfrewshire, which helps contractors working in Renfrewshire to fulfil community benefit requirements - part of the tendering and procurement process that Renfrewshire Council includes when awarding contracts to suppliers.

Mark McGee, from Thorn Athletic AFC, said: “A huge thanks to them for supplying and fitting ten new showers in our home and away changing areas.

"This was a much-needed upgrade we had been wanting to do for a while but did not have the resources.

“We very much appreciate the fantastic financial and in-kind support provided by companies like A. Alexander & Son that made this possible.”

William Beattie, from Kipco, added: “We’re delighted that we were able to upgrade our CCTV and make our in-house electrical systems safe.

“This will ensure the safety and wellbeing of our staff and centre users as we go about our services both inside and outside in the garden grounds.”

Stewart Alexander, managing director at A Alexander & Son, said his firm was pleased to help.

He said: "As part of our contracts we are committed to offering a flexible approach to all our projects, this includes providing quality and professional community benefits to worthy local social enterprises”.

Iain Cunningham, Third Sector Development Officer from Engage Renfrewshire, added: "We are very fortunate to work alongside companies like A Alexander & Son who understand and take community benefits seriously and are keen to ensure that they provide the best support possible.”
