Footballers to boycott social media for 24 hours in PFA's #Enough campaign against racism

Footballers are to stage a 24-hour social media boycott on Friday, demanding a crackdown on racism.

The campaign, organised by the PFA, will see players post a plain graphic with the slogan ‘#Enough.’ on accounts across Facebook, Instagram and Twitter at 9am on Good Friday, to mark the start of a 24-hour boycott of the platforms.

A series of high-profile incidents in recent weeks, both in football stadiums and on social media, have led to renewed calls for tougher action from authorities.

Tottenham defender Danny Rose, who admitted earlier this month that he ‘can’t wait to see the back of football’ because of the abuse, said: "We are simply not willing to stand by while too little is done by football authorities and social media companies to protect players from this disgusting abuse."

Watford skipper Troy Deeney, who recently disabled comments on his Instagram profile because of racist abuse, added: "On Friday we are sending a message to anyone that abuses players — or anyone else — whether from the crowd or online, that we won't tolerate it within football."

An email from the PFA to players encouraged them to post the following caption alongside the picture: “We are making a stand against racist abuse.

“We recognise that our platforms come with responsibility, and so we are using our voice to stand against racist abuse.

“Together, we are calling on social media platforms and footballing bodies to do more!”
