Footballer Jermaine Pennant jets to Dubai and Mexico after spending Christmas in Nottingham

Former Notts County winger Jermaine Pennant reportedly left the country after spending Christmas with his family in Nottingham and has been jetting around the world.

The retired footballer, 38, who grew up in The Meadows, is said to have flown off to Dubai to see in the new year, reports The Mirror.

He was pictured in the UAE on New Year's Eve and, in a post on January 3, the Celebrity Big Brother star hinted he'd been due to return to the UK but decided against going home.

He wrote in a post on Instagram: "Damn Missed my flight didn't I  #ooops #slightlyonpurpose."

Days later, he returned to the site to write: "Did you not hear.... maybe closing the boarders [borders]."

He did not make it clear what he meant in the post, but he may have been referring to rumours the UK government was preparing to close the country's air bridge with Dubai.

The UAE city had been on the UK's safe list, meaning travellers did not have to quarantine after arriving home.

The UK government removed all travel corridors from Monday January 18, meaning passengers travelling into the country will have to provide a negative Covid test and quarantine for 10 days on their return.

However, it looked like Jermaine made it back to the UK before the travel corridors were shut as he shared a picture of himself sat on a sofa on January 14.

When one follower suggested Jermaine could be heading to Mexico, sharing an Emoji of the country's flag and a tornado, the star replied: "I'm at home... would love wish I was [in Mexico]."

Days later, he posted a picture of himself soaking up the sun in an exotic destination before later revealing he'd headed to a resort in Mexico.

The trip coincided with his 38th birthday, which fell on Friday.

He wrote: "A sunny January is the way forward #birthdayboy."

Jermaine later shared pictures of himself at a restaurant in Tulum, on Mexico's Caribbean coast.

The star hasn't confirmed the reason behind his trips to Dubai and Mexico.

Under the current lockdown restrictions in the UK, international travel is banned unless it's for a specific purpose like work reasons.

Nottinghamshire Live has attempted to contact Mr Pennant for comment.
