Footballer Jason Cummings explains unfortunate nickname that's baffled fans

Scottish-born professional footballer Jason Cummings has made his World Cup 2022 debut for Australia, but it wasn't his performance that got people talking.

During Australia's clash against France, which saw them lose 4-1, the term "Cumdog" was trending on Twitter, much to the confusion of footie fans.

One person took to Twitter to ask: "Why the f*** is Cumdog trending again?".

Another said: "What the f*** a Cumdog?".

It turns out the striker has a somewhat unfortunate nickname – but it's one he actually gave himself.

The 27-year-old previously explained how he got the nickname in a Q&A conducted on the Socceroos Instagram page. He explained: "I got that nickname... it was my wrestling nickname."

He continued: "I wrestled some guy called Grado, he was a wrestler in Scotland, and he came in when I was at Hibs.

"He came in and he was giving it the big one so I chucked on the Spandex, put 'Cumdog' on the chest and I battered him."

The nickname clearly caught on, and he went on to reveal that when he moved to Australia he was given an Aussie twist.

He explained: "The rest was history. Everyone’s called me Cumdog since then but now I'm in Australia, everyone is calling me the Cumdingo. So the Cumdog or Cumdingo, no problem."

The former Nottingham Forest striker, who has been known as Cumdog for at least five years, has dual citizenship, which is why he is able to play for the Aussie team.

He joined the Central Coast Mariners in January, and quickly made an impact by scoring 10 goals in 21 A-League appearances.

Cummings is not the only footballer in the World Cup to have a funny nickname.

England centre-back Harry Maguire has been given a brutal nickname by former teammate Jamie Vardie.

Speaking during a BBC interview, Gabby Logan asked him: "Now I don't think I'm the first person to talk to you about this or point it out, but the size of your head has been mentioned. Is this a family trait?"

The defender replied: "Yes, blame my dad."

The interviewer then asked if his large head has resulted in any nicknames, to which Harry explaied that "Vards" always calls him Slabhead.

Gabbya asked: "That's not very complimentary is it?"

Harry cheekily replied: "No not really, I've got a few for him but I'll keep them off camera."

It also turns out Cristiano Ronaldo, who has just left Manchester United, was given a cute little nickname while at the club.

After posting a picture on Instagram, Argentinian footballer Lisandro Martinez revealed his nickname for the Portugal forward. Martinez wrote: "El bichoooo", which translates to "The Bug" in English.
