Football writers lack Liverpool faith as Mohamed Salah gets solitary backing for Golden Boot

The 2020/21 Premier League season is here which means it’s time to make some predictions.

Last season saw Liverpool take home the title with Jamie Vardy clinching the Golden Boot with 23 goals for Leicester City over the course of the campaign.

There was some stiff competition for the prize, though, with Arsenal’s Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Southampton’s Danny Ings both finishing on 22 goals for the season. Raheem Sterling didn’t do too badly either, scoring 20 times for Manchester City as they finished second.

Can Vardy keep his place as the Premier League’s most prolific goalscorer, or can he be caught by one of the aforementioned trio? Harry Kane, Mohamed Salah, Sadio Mane and Marcus Rashford could also be good bets to finish top of the scoring standings.

We asked Reach’s regional football writers across the country, covering every Premier League club, to give their predictions for the season ahead, including who will win the Golden Boot.

With Liverpool widely expected to be title challengers again, it seems reasonable to suggest the top scorer might come from them.

However, only LeedsLive’s Beren Cross thinks that could happen with writers covering every other side backing another player. His tip for top scorer is below.

Beren Cross (Leeds United) - “Mo Salah. He's the highest-scoring player in the best team. A very consistent performer since the day he arrived at Anfield.”

There is certainly no shortage of goalscoring talent in the Premier League at this moment in time, with a number of players capable of finishing the season with the Golden Boot in-hand. Salah is one of them having won the award in 2018/19.

Sadio Mane is another Liverpool player capable of finding the back of the net, scoring no fewer than 18 times in the Premier League last season. But it’s Salah who remains the Reds’ sharpest shooter in front of goal. Will that continue this season?
