Football world pays tribute to Liverpool legend Tommy Smith

The football world has been paying tribute after the death of Liverpool legend Tommy Smith.

His family confirmed the passing of the 'Anfield Iron' at the age of 74.

A four-time league winner and part of the side that won Liverpool's first European Cup in Rome, Smith left an impact in the world of football and many took the opportunity to share their condolences.

Tommy Smith's proudest moment as a Red shows how much he loved Liverpool

Former Reds defender Jamie Carragher shared a tribute on social media and also spoke highly of Smith ahead of Sky Sports' coverage of the game between Leicester City and Newcastle United, where he said:

“An amazing man and player, the ‘Anfield iron’ as he was christened by Bill Shankly. The word legend is used a lot, certainly at Liverpool Football Club. When you think of that word legend, it’s Tommy Smith.

"The reason being, with people like him, who brought the first ever FA Cup back to Liverpool, the first European Cup in Rome, he scored in that game. They’re the proper legends, there’s been a lot of great players at Liverpool, in the history of the club, but you go back to that word legend and no matter what comes after, what has come before, there will never be another Tommy Smith."

Carragher's words were among the many flooding in from the world of football, with Liverpool CEO Peter Moore, former Everton goalkeeper Neville Southall and a host of other Liverpool players also paying tribute.
