Football set for 'mid-May' return as La Liga chief pushes for UEFA to make 'joint ruling'

Spanish football chief Javier Tebas has revealed plans are being put in place for football to return in May.

The SFA and SPFL joined their English counterparts in postponing games until April 30 but La Liga president Tebas is targeting a return to business shortly after that.

The coronavirus pandemic has led to no football being played in Europe’s top leagues since last Thursday's Europa League fixtures including Rangers vs Bayer Leverkusen.

UEFA have circled June dates on games being played on the international stage but the Spanish decision maker is hoping to get their league going as soon as possible.

Tebas told Marca: "The plan is to be able to resume all European leagues in mid-May. All of them. It will depend on how the pandemic evolves. It could be before, but that is the date we've got in mind about being able to resume.

"We don't want to change any season. We haven't planned for that. In this situation, we're managing scenarios in the short term. If we can't resolve the short term, we're going to have more time to approach the long term. We haven't planned it in our heads either.

"The same. Everything at the same time. I think UEFA are with us and the idea that we have is that and we all know how far we have to go to find a solution to the problem.

"We're trying to resume all competitions. A joint ruling for everything. It's impossible to just resolve the Spanish league."

Since the virus first started taking hold in Europe, there has been a lot of talk of games being played without fans.

Tebas insists it's down to each individual country over what they do, but he feels they all need to come together to discuss it.

He added: "That depends on the health authorities in each country. We will be preparing calendars for more than 30 league competitions. It has to be done together."
