Football rumours: Steven Gerrard back to Liverpool in coaching role?

Just a few months after arriving in Los Angeles to escape the goldfish bowl-attention he received in Liverpool, Steven Gerrard will feel the pressure of home weigh on his shoulders again – perhaps sooner than he imagined, as it says here that Jürgen Klopp, the new Liverpool manager, will have him on speed-dial and plans to pester Gerrard into taking a coaching role at the club and helping make Liverpool half-decent again.

Klopp may have to do some arm-twisting, mind, as given the option of living in Beverly Hills and training and playing in the sunshine and not being mithered, or putting the cones out on a cold, winter morning at Melwood and being told excitably by a German fella’ to get everyone to do double-training, the Mill can guess what he’d choose.

Meanwhile, Brendan Rodgers is following the Roy Hodgson career trajectory perfectly in that, having been told to do one by Liverpool, he is being lined up as the next England manager when Hodgson calls it a day after Euro 2016. Presumably experience of having managed a Merseyside club is a requirement for the job given that David Moyes and Roberto Martínez are also on a shortlist of replacements.

Spurs are still hoping to add a bit of pep into their attack and hope to lure Laurent Depoitre away from Gent to do just that. But if they can’t they’ll risk the wrath of West Brom once more by posting notes through Saido Berahino’s door telling him how great north-east London is.

Tim Sherwood has had a good look at his Aston Villa squad and determined that their failure to start the season adequately is not down to his signings at all. No. It’s all the fault of the goalkeeper signed by a predecessor, Brad Guzan, who should be doing a human octopus impression and stopping all these shots flying past him. Villa will hunt down Mainz goalkeeper Loris Karius as a replacement.

And elsewhere, erm, there aren’t any more rumours. Sorry about that.
