Football recruiting: Carmel OT Sean Foster decommits from Minnesota

Dec. 02--Carmel senior offensive tackle Sean Foster is suddenly one of the most sought-after recruits in the state after he elected to decommit from Minnesota on Tuesday.

Foster announced his decommitment via Twitter, declaring that he was "saddened by the recent departures of some amazing coaches and look forward to becoming part of a great university."

In late October, Minnesota coach Jerry Kill resigned because of health concerns. Minnesota hired Tracy Claeys to replace Kill, but Claeys fired offensive coordinator Matt Limegrover and quarterbacks coach Jim Zebrowski the day after Minnesota's season finale.

Foster told the Tribune that he had 28 offers at the time of his oral commitment to Minnesota in the spring. A four-star recruit, Foster is fourth in the state among seniors in 247Sports.com's composite ranking.

"I'm going to take it slow since today was the first day of not being a Gopher anymore," Foster said. "I'm going to open it up to pretty much everyone. I didn't expect this to come at all, actually."

The 6-foot-8, 295-pound Foster laughed at the prospect of his father's hypothetical desire to influence his choice.

Troy Foster played right tackle for Iowa.

"Iowa did not offer me a scholarship before I committed (to Minnesota), but they were heavily recruiting me," Foster said.

Foster said he didn't have a top three list of schools before committing to Minnesota. Although frustrated at not having the chance to suit up for Minnesota, Foster is excited about jumping back into his recruiting.

"I'm thankful to be in this situation and thank the Minnesota community for everything they did, and I can't wait to get back in the recruiting world," he said.

"I want to make sure I have the best fit. So does my family. We want to feel comfortable with the coaching staff and everything else with the school."

Jones to Michigan State (Part 2): Evanston senior defensive tackle Naquan Jones is nearing closer to recommitting officially to Michigan State. Jones, the No. 2 senior prospect in the state, according to 247Sports.com, decommitted from Michigan State on Nov. 10.

"It's not official yet, but we're working in that direction," Jones said.

He originally pledged his commitment to the Spartans on June 8 during an afternoon announcement, several hours after Lake Park defensive lineman Mike Panasiuk chose the Spartans.

The 6-foot-4, 283-pounder is waiting to talk extensively with the Michigan State coaching staff after Saturday's Big Ten Championship game against Iowa. Jones decided to decommit after Michigan State's coaches became disenchanted with Jones after he decided to visit other schools.

He attended Wisconsin's game against Northwestern, and had planned to make visits to Mississippi, South Carolina and Nebraska in January.

"I kind of felt I burned a bridge with them by decommitting, but ultimately it was because I wanted to take some visits," Jones said. "I felt the relationship with Michigan State has always been so genuine and I fit in well with their program. I was supposed to take some January visits, but I'll probably go shut those down.

"Coach (Mark) Dantonio let me know he will give me some time to see if this is decision that I want to do, and hopefully I'm welcome back. Once they give me the green light, I'm definitely going to go back and commit. I'm just waiting on them, but I know they are pretty busy this week with the Big Ten Championship. Probably when they have more time, I will call them next week and we will get everything situated and make everything official."

Tidbits: Loyola junior tight end Jake Marwede caught four passes for 83 yards and carried the ball twice for three yards in Saturday's 41-0 win against Marist in the Class 8A state championship game in DeKalb.

Marwede made the most of his limited carries, with third-quarter touchdowns of 1 and 2 yards. The 6-5, 230-pounder added a few other notable milestones in the past few days -- scholarship offers from Arkansas, Illinois, Iowa State and Western Michigan.
