Football pitch in Tredegar torn to pieces after a vehicle does 'donuts' all over it

A popular football field in Tredegar, has been seriously damaged after a vehicle raced across it "doing donuts".

The field, known as Pondfield is based in Parkville, Dukestown, and used regularly by a number of local teams - including Dukestown Football Club, Oak Football Club as well as other junior teams.

However, at around 10 am on February 17,a vehicle sped across the damp surface leaving it in a state of complete disrepair. Deep tyre marks now covering a significant portion of the pitch.

Chris Walters, 32, is the club captain for Dukestown FC.

He said: "I found out about what had happened to the field yesterday morning, as we live close by and my girlfriend had seen the damage when she went past.

"I was absolutely gutted to be honest as this is such a well used place under normal circumstances, for ourselves, our juniors, and also the local rugby team on occasion.

"It's sad to think that something that brings happiness to so many can be ruined by one person in just a few minutes, and it's really not on. A lot of local people help to maintain this as well so I also feel really sorry for them.

"The damage done is pretty significant, with deep tyre marks now spanning the entire length and width of the pitch.

"I'd like to hope that the ground will start to recover by the time we are able to start to playing on it again after lockdown, but to be honest it is so bad I think it's going to take a long time."

Local councillor Haydn Trollope, who lives nearby in Tredegar, said repairing the pitch could cost a lot of money.

He said: "Acts of vandalism like this are completely out of order and I really am disgusted to see that somebody would do something like this for no reason.

"I've spoken to an officer who maintains some of the parks this morning, though with the current state of the pitch it seems like it could take quite a bit of time and money to repair.

"These people just need to realise the damage they are causing to our community when they do things like this, and I hope if anyone has any information they will come forward to stop it happening again."

Gwent Police confirmed it is investigating the case.

A force spokeswoman said: "We received a report of criminal damage in Parkville, Dukestown, Tredegar on February 17 at around 10am, after a vehicle was seen driving on a recreational field.

"Anyone with any information or CCTV footage regarding this incident is asked to contact Gwent Police, quoting log references 78 17/02/21.

"Call us on 101, send us a direct message on Facebook or Twitter, or call Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111."
