Football matches in Scotland will be limited to 500 fans in bid to control Omicron

The First Minister has announced football matches will be capped at 500 fans from December 26th in a bid to control Omicron.

Nicola Sturgeon said the limit for outdoor events will apply for up to three weeks and one metre physical distancing will also be required - first revealed by the Record.

This will include matches such as the Old Firm clash on January 2nd,

Sturgeon revealed the new curbs during a speech to MSPs at Holyrood.

While her core advice to Scots is reducing socialising and staying at home as much as feasible, she said further steps are necessary to keep people safe from the spread of the deadly variant..

She said: “First, from the 26th December - inclusive - for a period of up to three weeks, we intend to place limits on the size of public events that can take place. This does not apply to private life events such as weddings.

“For indoor standing events the limit will be 100; for indoor seated events it will be 200; and for outdoor events it will be 500 seated or standing.

“Physical distancing of 1 metre will be required at events that go ahead within these limits.

“This will of course make sports matches, including football, effectively spectator-free over this three week period.”

She added: “And it will also mean that, unfortunately, large-scale Hogmanay celebrations - including that planned here in our capital city - will not proceed.”

In England, there continues to be uncertainty over Covid restrictions after the Cabinet failed to reach a decision on Monday, though Prime Minister Boris Johnson said the Government will “reserve the possibility” of implementing new restrictions.

England currently has the most relaxed rules in the UK, but a recent vote in Parliament saw some measures introduced, including Covid passes for entry into nightclubs and other venues as of December 15.

In Wales, sporting events will be played behind closed doors from December 26 to help control the spread of Omicron.
