Football match descends into chaos as fans clash outside ground

A man has been arrested after a series of fights broke out between Southport and Chorley fans last weekend.

The fighting which originated outside Haig Avenue during a National League football match on Saturday, November, 5 saw a 29-year-old from Adlington arrested on suspicion of breach of the peace.

During the match, flares were thrown onto the pitch and two people were ejected from the ground. Damage was also reported to a car nearby.

It is the not first time this year that violence has marred a match at Haig Avenue. In June a fight broke out between Southport and Blackpool FC fans in the stadium during a pre-season game.

Community Policing Sergeant Andy Dentith said: "These were unpleasant scenes in full view of local residents and innocent match-goers, none of whom should have to experience such aggression, which clubs work so hard to eradicate from our sports grounds, and whose stewards do so much good work to minimise such issues.

"Thankfully nobody has reported any serious injuries and the crowd dispersed following police action, but we are taking these incidents very seriously. Officers will now fully investigate, working alongside both clubs to identify those responsible and take appropriate action.

"If you saw, or captured on CCTV, dashcam, or other devices anything then let us know via @MerPolCC with reference 22000813443."
