Football match abandoned as man in his 20s airlifted to hospital

An air ambulance was forced to take a man to hospital in a serious condition during a football match yesterday.

The North West Ambulance Service confirmed a number of vehicles made their way to Ashville Football Club on Cross Lane, Wallasey, on Monday, August 29, during the team's match with Ellesmere Rangers at around 4.50pm. Ashville FC posted on Facebook that the match had been suspended due to a "serious medical emergency".

The post said: "Game abandoned after a serious medical emergency involving one of our players. Updates will come out when appropriate but right now all of our thoughts and attention are with the player involved who won’t be named at this time in respect of his privacy."

The club has since confirmed that the the player is awake and talking, with more than 100 people wishing the footballer well. The post said: "Thank you to everyone for your messages of support, we had some amazing news earlier that he has woken up and has been talking."

A NWAS spokesperson told the ECHO : "An ambulance, advanced paramedic, air ambulance and response vehicle attended Ashville Football Club following a 999 call at 16.51 reporting a patient suffering a medical emergency.

"The man in his 20s was taken to hospital in a serious condition."
