Football match abandoned after alleged racial abuse

A football match between two amateur sides was abandoned after an allegation of racial abuse.

The game between Trallwm AFC reserves and their counterparts from Gorseinon Athletic was played at the home side’s ground in Trallwm Park, Llwynhendy, over the weekend, but was called off early by the referee, following an allegation a racial epithet was used.

The West Wales Football Association has confirmed the incident is under investigation.

Geoff Mahoney, secretary of Trallwm AFC, said the same game had also been interrupted by a supporter running onto the pitch.

He added: “We cannot comment any further until we have more information. There is an inquiry underway into what happened, and we do not want to prejudice that”.

Gorseinon Athletic have also been approached for a response, but declined to comment.

A spokesman for the West Wales Football Association confirmed the alleged incident was being investigated, but declined to comment further pending the outcome of the review.

He added: “The WWFA can confirm it has received a report on this matter and it is currently under investigation in accordance with the FAW’s non-discrimination regulations.

“Although we cannot comment further on a case under investigation, the WWFA do not condone racism and we encourage all football clubs to report any incidents to the FAW or Area Association”.
