Football manager sues Daily Mail for libel

The Everton football manager, David Moyes, is suing the Daily Mail for libel over comments made by England player Wayne Rooney in his autobiography. Moyes was accused by Rooney of being overbearing, controlling and ultimately responsible for his transfer to Manchester United. The criticisms were repeated in the Mail's serialisation. As The Guardian's Paul Kelso argues, though Moyes has not sued either Rooney or the publishers, Harper Collins, it is hard to see how the player can be kept out of proceedings if the case goes to court.
