Football Manager 26 Affected? Unity’s 2017-Era Vulnerability Raises Concerns

The move to Unity was meant to revolutionize the Football Manager series, but so far it’s only done so in a negative way, culminating in the cancellation of Football Manager 25 after the overhaul proved too ambitious to finish on time. As the two-year wait for a new Football Manager finally nears its end, however, early looks at the game in the form of controlled media releases have been going well, with fans excited to get their chance with the new game and the new features being shown off, as well as the attempted general quality of life improvements.

With the game’s November 4th release getting close, anticipation is perhaps at an all-time high for the series, which would make it a very unfortunate time to have some bad news, particularly associated with the Unity engine. Unfortunately, that’s just what gamers got with the announcement of a high-risk vulnerability discovered in the Engine dating back to 2017.

Important Questions For The Unity Vulnerability And Football Manager 26

If you’re worried this could mean delays for Football Manager 26, here’s what you need to know:

What Is The Vulnerability?

The vulnerability is an issue discovered in the Unity engine dating back to 2017, and which could be affecting any games published on the engine in the intervening years. It was classified as high risk, as it potentially allowed someone exploiting the vulnerability to gain local file access on the gamer’s computer up to the privilege level on which the game was being run. Fortunately, according the release by Unity, there is not believed to have been any known exploitation of this vulnerability.

How Can You Stay Protected Against The Vulnerability?

The key to security here is in updating, both by gamers and developers. After being discovered and reported by a security researcher in June, Unity began the process of patching the exploit to remove the vulnerability from the engine and games developed on it. Unity have now released a patch built to be compatible with all builds dating back to 2019.1, covering all Unity developers platforms updated in the last six years and closing the exploit.

This allows developers to patch their applications and protect gamers. As a gamer, the best way to protect yourself is to ensure you have updates on and make any recommended updates for games you play built in Unity before playing them to allow for updated fixes to hit your PC and protect you.

Will The Security Vulnerability Affect Football Manager 26’s Release Date?

The good news for fans of Football Manager is that this exploit does not appear to jeopardize the game’s planned November release. There has been no announcement from developers about the vulnerability or concerns about its effect on the game. Because the exploit and fix were announced more than a month out from release, fixes should be in place before fans have their first hands-on with the game, allowing you to download and manage your team to victory without fear.
