Football mad Airdrie kid wins competition to be mascot for Liverpool v Man City

A football-mad youngster from Airdrie rubbed shoulders with the European and English champions at Wembley on Sunday.

Rio Callander, eight, won a competition run by fast-food chain McDonald’s to be a player mascot at the 2019 FA Community Shield between Liverpool and Manchester City.

Rio walked out alongside Reds’ midfielder Gini Wijnaldum in front of 77,000 excited fans at England’s biggest stadium.

Scotland captain and Liverpool left-back Andy Robertson also played in the game.

Delighted Rio said: “Walking out at Wembley was amazing!

“It was so loud, and it was really exciting seeing all the fans cheering for us.

“I can’t wait to tell all my friends at school about this.”

Liverpool pushed Premier League champions Manchester City all the way, with the game finishing 1-1 before City triumphed 5-4 on penalties.
