• Congratulations to Brighton – promoted midweek and now officially champions of League One – and to Chesterfield, whose promotion from League Two needs only a little t-crossing and i-dotting: they're 12 points and a goal-difference swing of 16 ahead of fourth-placed Shrewsbury with four to play.
• In the Championship, five of the top six positions appear all but sewn up, but Leeds – who needed an 88th-minute own-goal to avoid defeat at home to Watford – are insecure in sixth. And who, given their current form (12 games without defeat, eight successive victories) would bet against Reading stealing the second automatic promotion place?
• A crucial day at the bottom in the second tier. Had Crystal Palace, in 21st, beaten 22nd-placed Scunthorpe the bottom three would have been cast adrift. Instead they lost a hard-fought match in which eight players were booked and a further two sent off, Doncaster above them extended their rotten run to one win in 15, and in the battle of the bottom two Preston beat Sheffield United 3-1 to give themselves half a chance of avoiding the drop, and all but condemn the Blades to League One. There will be two Steel City derbies next season, almost certainly.
• There was no change at all at either end of League One, where the top six all won and the bottom six all lost.
• There were no away wins in League Two, though seven of the 11 games were drawn. Gillingham's 1-1 home stalemate against Morecambe was their 16th game without defeat, while at the other end of the form table Northampton's creditable 2-2 draw at Wycombe was their 16th match without a win. Stockport are fit for the last rites after a 2-0 defeat at Shrewsbury, while Barnet's Martin Allen-inspired resurgence appears to have departed with their manager – they lost 2-0 at second-placed Bury and, to make matters worse, the team immediately above them, Burton Albion, ended their own rancid run of one win in 10 with a 2-0 victory over Cheltenham. The Bees are now three points behind Northampton and Burton (who have a game in hand). Allen's new employers, Notts County, incidentally, lost 2-0 to Bournemouth in League One to remain in the relegation zone.
