Championship

• The substitute Philipp Hofmann grabbed a 96th-minute winner for 10-man Brentford in a pulsating 2-1 victory over Nottingham Forest. The German bundled home from close range deep into injury time to inflict the fourth away defeat in a row on Forest and lift the roof off Griffin Park. The game exploded into life just after the hour mark, after a cagey first half, when Liverpool loanee Sergi Canos lashed home from close range after Harlee Dean’s header back across goal. But minutes later Bees centre-back Dean was shown a straight red card for an off-the-ball clash with Jonathan Williams and Henri Lansbury capitalised on a rare slip by Toumani Diagouraga to slot home from 12 yards. In the dying minutes Brentford’s James Tarkowski saw a 90th-minute header bounce back off the post but the winner came in the sixth of seven minutes inexplicably added on in a game of few injuries. Ryan Woods’ snapshot volley was palmed clear to Tarkowski, who steered an effort goalwards – sparking a frenzied goalmouth melee which Hofmann finally ended with the decisive touch.

• Lucas João scored twice as Sheffield Wednesday netted three late goals to snatch a 3-1 win over Huddersfield. The visitors, with new coach David Wagner in charge for the first time, led through Sean Scannell’s opener early in the second half, but João’s equaliser in the 78th minute was the start of a fine finish to the match from the Owls. Kieran Lee put them ahead in the 83rd minute and the 22-year-old Portuguese striker got his second deep into stoppage time to complete the comeback.

Ipswich were twice pegged back as Wolves earned a 2-2 draw at Portman Road. Jonathan Douglas and Daryl Murphy gave Ipswich the lead but Wolves earned a draw through equalisers from James Henry and Benik Afobe.

• Neil Redfearn enjoyed a happy return to Elland Road as the former Leeds manager saw his Rotherham side win for the first time with a 1-0 success. Joe Newell got the all-important goal before both sides were reduced to 10 men, Rotherham’s Leon Best and Gaetano Berardi of Leeds were dismissed for violent conduct following an incident off the ball.

Derby moved up to fourth with a 2-0 home win over Cardiff, who saw their play-off hopes hit as a result. The Rams broke the deadlock after 55 minutes through George Thorne following good work by Chris Martin and Andreas Weimann wrapped up the win with the second.

• Moussa Dembélé’s sixth goal in as many matches rescued managerless Fulham as they came from behind to draw 1-1 at MK Dons in the first ever competitive match between the two sides. MK Dons had taken the lead after half an hour as Dean Bowditch superbly volleyed home for his third of the season. But right on the stroke of half-time visitors Fulham were level as Dembélé made up for an earlier miss when he slotted home from six yards.

Charlton eased their way out of the relegation zone with an excellent if unexpected 1-0 win over Birmingham. Their captain, Johnnie Jackson, scored the only goal of the game just after the hour as Charlton made it back-to-back victories with their first away triumph of the season. Birmingham surprisingly slumped to their fourth home defeat of the campaign and at no time did they look like repeating their 5-2 mauling of Fulham in their last outing.

Reading claimed their first win in six Championship matches with an unconvincing 2-1 victory over lowly Bolton as Steve Clarke set about appeasing Royals fans. Clarke had looked set to be heading to Fulham earlier in the week but changed his mind after talks with the west London club, and Lucas Piazon helped lift some of the pressure off him at the Madejski Stadium with a solo effort to put the Berkshire club ahead. Danny Williams stretched the advantage with a penetrative run and shot before the break but Reading faded in the second half. Bolton reduced the deficit in the 80th minute through a Liam Feeney spot-kick but Reading held on in the frantic closing stages.

League One

• Jacob Murphy scored a 10-minute hat-trick to send Coventry to the top of the table after a 4-1 victory over previous leaders Gillingham. Murphy took advantage of a mistake by Adedeji Oshilaja to open the scoring before Ben Turner headed the Sky Blues 2-0 ahead. Murphy then raced clear to double his tally and completed his hat-trick from Chris Stokes’ cross. Bradley Dack pulled one back for the visitors.

• Jose Baxter’s 66th-minute strike earned Sheffield United a 1-1 draw at third placed Walsall after Tom Bradshaw had given the Saddlers the lead. Alex Revell scored the only goal as Wigan climbed to fourth with a 1-0 win over Shrewsbury, while Burton dropped to fifth after Jerome Binnom-Williams’ own goal gave Bury a 1-0 win.

• A Tony McMahon penalty and strike from Greg Leigh saw Bradford stretch their unbeaten run to seven games with a 2-0 victory at Scunthorpe. Millwall extended their unbeaten record to six games with a 4-1 victory over Colchester. Lee Gregory and Shane Ferguson saw the Lions take a 2-0 lead into the break before Chris Porter pulled one back for Colchester. But Ferguson and Byron Webster made sure of the Lions’ victory.

• Jermaine Anderson scored a brace as Peterborough piled more misery on bottom club Crewe with a 5-1 victory at Gresty Road. Jon Taylor, Conor Washington and Lee Angol were also on target for Posh, meaning Ryan Colclough’s strike for the struggling Railwaymen was mere consolation. Adam Thompson’s effort 14 minutes from time saw Southend see off Blackpool 1-0, a result that sees the Seasiders slip to second bottom in the table. Port Vale edged a thrilling clash with Chesterfield 3-2 at Vale Park. Sam Kelly gave the hosts the lead just six minutes in but the Spireites were level two minutes later when Lee Novak hit the target. Ajay Leitch-Smith and Louis Dodds then put the hosts two goals up before Rai Simons pulled a late one back for Chesterfield.

• Ian Henderson was at the double to guide Rochdale to a 2-0 victory at Doncaster, while a late winner from Kevin Long saw Barnsley come away from Oldham with a 2-1 win. Conor Hourihane gave the Tykes a first-half lead before Mark Yeates levelled things but Long ensured the points went back to Yorkshire. Swindon dropped back into the relegation zone after going down to a 5-1 defeat to Fleetwood. Adam El-Abd turned the ball into his own net before a penalty from Antoni Sarcevic and goals from David Henen and Tarique Fosu had the hosts sailing at 4-0. Nicky Ajose pulled one back for Martin Ling’s men but Bobby Grant wrapped it up.

League Two

Leyton Orient reaped the benefits of a week-long hotel stay by securing only their third success in 13 League Two matches with a 3-2 home win against York to stay in touch with the top three. The club’s owner Francesco Becchetti watched Orient slip to back-to-back league defeats at Hartlepool on Sunday and promptly booked the entire squad into a Waltham Abbey hotel in a bid to halt their recent slump in form. The Italian businessman’s decision had the desired effect. Mathieu Baudry gave Orient a 21st-minute lead and Jay Simpson made it 2-0 in first-half stoppage time before Bryn Morris steered home York’s response in the fourth minute of time added on before the break. Simpson restored Orient’s two-goal advantage in the 64th minute before Vadaine Oliver’s 86th-minute header ensured a nervous finish.

Plymouth remain top but lost for only the second time at home this season, going down 2-1 to south-west rivals Exeter. Ryan Harley struck twice in nine minutes to put the visitors in control, converting a 30th-minute penalty after Kelvin Mellor’s foul on David Wheeler and then shooting home low from inside the box. Oscar Threlkeld reduced the deficit for Plymouth just after the hour-mark. Northampton maintained their promotion challenge with a 2-1 win at Notts County. Rod McDonald headed home for Northampton in the 31st minute and after Jon Stead’s fifth goal of the season had drawn County level early in the second half, Brendan Moloney tucked home the visitors’ second in the 76th minute.

• Danny Grainger’s double, including a stoppage-time equaliser, earned Carlisle a 2-2 home draw against Portsmouth. Grainger picked himself up to convert a 44th-minute penalty after he was fouled by Christian Burgess to give Carlisle a half-time lead. Portsmouth hit back after the break through Caolan Lavery and on-loan Sheffield United striker Marc McNulty two minutes later but Grainger struck in the fourth minute of time added on. Kemar Roofe’s 85th-minute free-kick clinched Oxford a 1-0 win at Dagenham & Redbridge.

Accrington twice came from behind to win 3-2 at Cambridge. Barry Corr fired his ninth goal of the season to give Cambridge a 13th-minute lead and after Sean McConville equalised for Accrington, Luke Berry restored the home side’s lead before the break. Accrington equalised for a second time through Tom Davies early in the second half and Josh Windass steered home a 53rd-minute penalty after Leon Legge’s foul on Billy Kee. Adebayo Azeez grabbed an injury-time equaliser to clinch AFC Wimbledon a 1-1 home draw against Wycombe, for whom Jason McCarthy scored early in the second half.

• Matt Green’s double helped Mansfield to a 3-1 home win against Hartlepool. Green converted in the 24th minute and after Hartlepool got back on level terms before half-time courtesy of Krystian Pearce’s own goal, Adi Yussuf restored Mansfield’s lead and Green struck his second in the 81st minute. Rhys Weston struck twice in 66 seconds as Crawley beat Bristol Rovers 2-1, putting his side two-up in the 10th minute. Matty Taylor converted a late penalty for the visitors. The Luton striker Paul Benson was shown a straight red card for his foul on Tom Conlon as his side were held 0-0 at Stevenage. Barnet’s home game against Morecambe also ended goalless and Newport drew 0-0 against visitors Yeovil.
