Championship
• Nottingham Forest won away from home for the first time since February against 10-man QPR. Chris Ramsey’s side took the lead through who else but Charlie Austin, who scored his fifth of the season with a low strike. Rangers appeared fortunate but not for long, with Rob Green sent off for fouling debutant Chris O’Grady inside the box during the second half, as the tide turned in favour of Forest. Henri Lansbury powered home the resulting spot-kick past substitute keeper Alex Smithies. Two of Dougie Freedman’s loan signings Ryan Mendes and Nelson Oliviera then combined, before Portuguese striker Oliviera tucked his winner underneath Smithies eight minutes from time.
• Bristol City are finding life tough back in the second tier and unbeaten Birmingham soon seized upon their frailties, as Clayton Donaldson helped himself to a hat-trick before half-time. The one-time Ligue 2 player of the year Jonathan Kodjia scored a brace to keep the Robins in the mix before Jonathan Grounds headed home to seal three points. Andre Gray, who turned his nose up at a move to Ashton Gate, scored his first goal as a £9m striker against Sheffield Wednesday. The hosts, Burnley, opened the scoring through David Jones before Atdhe Nuhiu replied. But the Clarets went ahead courtesy of Matty Taylor before Gray sealed the win.
• Brighton ensured their fans can shout ‘We are top the league’ for another week after Tomer Hemed’s early strike was enough to defeat Hull. The two teams paid tribute to victims of the Shoreham air crash with a minute’s applause prior to kick-off. Another B, Bolton, picked up their very own three points with a 2-1 win over Wolves. The much admired Wolves striker, Benik Afobe, scored a second-half strike which proved to be merely a consolation for Kenny Jackett’s side.
• Cardiff carried on their impressive start to the season with a comfortable 2-0 win over Huddersfield. Anthony Pilkington and Joe Mason’s second-half goals leave the visitors in the drop zone.
• Rotherham tried their best to get out of the dreaded bottom three but Patrick Bauer equalised for Charlton to ensure Steve Evans could take only a single point back to Yorkshire. Uwe Rösler had Mirco Antenucci to thank for securing Leeds a draw against his old side Brentford. The Bees opened the scoring through debutant Marco Djuricin. Derby may still be adjusting to the reality of playing another season in the Championship under their new manager, Paul Clement, but they are improving. Chris Martin scored a classy brace to help see off Preston 2-1.
• And Middlesbrough are back! They beat MK Dons 2-0 to make amends for defeat at home last time out, with Stewart Downing scoring his first goal since returning to the Riverside.
League One
• A 5-1 defeat at the hands of Peterborough was the last action that Darren Kelly will see as manager of Oldham as he was sacked after the embarrassing defeat. The former Luton striker Lee Angol bagged himself two goals while fellow summer signing Souleymane Coulibaly also found the net twice.
• It was goals galore up at Oakwell, too, where Barnsley reminded Swindon that the business of winning games is not so easy with a 4-1 victory. Not to be outdone, Chesterfield and Colchester contested a six-goal thriller which ended with Chesterfield defender Charlie Raglan putting the ball in his own net and the hosts outside the play-offs. Fleetwood and Bradford also had to make do with sharing points as James Hanson’s strike cancelled out Jimmy Ryan’s opener.
• Uche Ikpeazu scored a last-minute winner for Port Vale against Gary Caldwell’s Wigan. Leon Barnett had another eventful game for the Latics, scoring his side’s equaliser before seeing red, just a week after grabbing himself an own goal in their win at Chesterfield. Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink, meanwhile, looks to really have the knack of this football management thing. His side, Burton Albion, won again as they beat in-form Rochdale 1-0 thanks to a Stuart Beavon strike. Crewe lost 3-1 at home to Millwall whilst Blackpool suffered more misery with a 2-1 defeat to league leaders Gillingham.
• Scunthorpe beat Coventry 1-0 whilst Shrewsbury overcame Southend by the same scoreline. Walsall eased past managerless Doncaster 2-0, who remain in the relegation zone. And Nigel Adkins’s indifferent start to life at Sheffield United continued with a surprising 3-1 home defeat to Bury.
League Two
• Leyton Orient mustered up a point away at Cambridge thanks to Jay Simpson’s late equaliser, to ensure they remain top of the table, just. Breathing down their necks now are Plymouth, who leapfrogged Wycombe with a 2-1 win at Adams Park, and Portsmouth, who moved into the dizzy heights of the automatic promotion places with a 3-1 win against Mad Dog’s Barnet.
• Newly-promoted Bristol Rovers tasted defeat at home once more, but this time it was inflicted by Accrington Stanley, who scored the only goal of the game through Billy Kee. Adebayo Akinfenwa scored a late equaliser for AFC Wimbledon against relegation-threatened Yeovil, who have picked up just one win in the league this season, to heap more pain on Glovers manager Paul Sturrock. Christian Ribeiro scored an injury-time winner for Exeter against Hartlepool, to guide Paul Tisdale’s men into the play-off positions, where they are joined by Mansfield, who let out all their anger on Crawley, in one full swoop, a convincing 4-0 win.
• Keith Curle’s Carlisle left Dagenham and Redbridge on the edge of the relegation zone with a 2-1 win, just below Luton, who lost out to fellow strugglers Notts County 3-2. Elsewhere, Northampton beat Oxford 1-0 whilst Stevenage and York played out just the four-goal thriller, leaving both sides just shy of mid-table. And Terry Butcher’s Newport County remain rooted to the bottom of the division after they failed to win at the eighth successive time of asking, coming out on the bottom of a 2-1 defeat to Morecambe.
