Football League: your thoughts

Watford

Championship

• Bournemouth suffered a painful setback in their bid for a first-ever promotion to the top flight, as a 95th-minute Chris Maguire penalty earned visitors Sheffield Wednesday a 2-2 draw. Matt Ritchie had put 10-man Bournemouth ahead with a long-range strike just five minutes from time.

• Watford are the new pacesetters after Craig Cathcart’s acrobatic finish gave them a priceless 1-0 win at home to Birmingham. The Hornets are top with 85 points, with Bournemouth second on 84, above Middlesbrough, who beat Norwich 1-0 on Friday night, on goal difference.

• Dramatic draws galore for the play-off hopefuls: Derby fought back from 3-1 down to draw 4-4 against Huddersfield, with Tom Ince grabbing two goals in the game of the day. Wolves and Ipswich drew 1-1 at Molineux, with seventh-placed Brentford unable to take advantage, twice losing their lead as they drew 2-2 with Bolton. Derby stay fifth, a point ahead of Ipswich, who are three points clear of Wolves and Brentford.

• Anything less than victory would have relegated Wigan to the third tier, but a late James Perch winner against Brighton means the Latics, as has been tradition, live to fight another day. Millwall, currently in the third relegation spot, drew 0-0 at Cardiff.

• Elsewhere in the division, Leeds’ troubles continued as they lost 2-1 to Charlton at the Valley, while Rudy Gestede scored a hat-trick as Blackburn drew 3-3 with Nottingham Forest. Fulham secured second-tier safety with Matt Smith the only scorer as they won 1-0 at Blackpool.

League One

• MK Dons’ 6-1 thrashing of Leyton Orient had repercussions at both ends of the table. Rob Hall scored twice for MK Dons, who moved to within a point of second-placed Preston after their draw at Port Vale on Friday. Swindon’s automatic promotion hopes took a surprise hit as they lost 1-0 at home to relegated Yeovil.

• Crawley climbed out of the drop zone with a crucial 2-0 win at home to Notts County, returning Orient to the bottom four in the process. Crewe and Colchester earned home draws, against Walsall and Scunthorpe respectively. County, Orient and Colchester currently occupy the three vacant relegation places, but all have a game in hand on the teams above.

• Away from the frantic promotion and relegation chases, Bristol City sewed up the League One title with a goalless draw against Coventry. At Bramall Lane, Sheffield United all but confirmed a playoff place with a 1-1 draw at home to Bradford.

League Two

• Burton’s 2-1 win at Morecambe was enough to guarantee a first-ever season in the third tier for the Brewers. Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink’s team can still theoretically be caught by fourth-placed Bury – but not by third-placed Wycombe.

• Second-placed Shrewsbury moved closer to promotion after Mark Ellis’ goal gave them a 1-0 win over York. Wycombe’s goalless draw at AFC Wimbledon opens the door for Bury and Southend, who won 1-0 at Exeter to move three points behind the Chairboys.

• At the bottom, time is running out for Tranmere, who lost 3-0 at home to Oxford, and Cheltenham, 2-0 losers at Northampton. There are just two games left for either side to overhaul Hartlepool, who lost 3-0 at Luton. That result means the Hatters drew level with Plymouth in the playoff race, after the Pilgrims lost 2-0 at Carlisle.
