Championship

  • Burnley maintained their position at the top of the Championship with an injury-time equaliser at Brighton, Michael Keane heading home in the 93rd minute to secure a 2-2 draw. Dale Stephens gave the hosts the lead, only for Andre Gray to force home an equaliser a few moments later. Anthony Knockaert put Brighton back ahead, and Burnley perhaps should’ve had a goal a few minutes before their eventual equaliser, another Keane header appearing to go over the line only for the officials to say no.
  • The Clarets are a place above Middlesbrough, who moved into the automatic promotion spots on Friday night with a fine 3-2 away win at QPR, goals from Jordan Rhodes, Gastón Ramírez and Ben Gibson sealing the victory for Aitor Karanka’s men. Boro are three points behind the leaders, but have a game in hand.
  • Hull kept up the pressure on the top three, beating in-form Bristol City 4-0 to move within four points of second place and end a five-game run without a win. Curtis Davies, Robert Snodgrass, Mo Diamé and Sone Aluko scored the goals to calm a few nerves that might have been gathering on Humberside.
  • Sheffield Wednesday leapfrogged Derby in the playoff places after a late Fernando Forestieri goal gave the Owls a 1-0 victory at Huddersfield, while Derby dropped to sixth place and just a point ahead of Cardiff City, who beat the Rams 2-1 thanks to a second-half strike by Stuart O’Keefe.
  • Preston kept their outside chances of making the play-offs alive with a 2-1 win in the Lancashire derby against Blackburn. Elliott Ward gave Rovers the lead after 13 minutes, but a penalty from former Blackburn man Joe Garner, then a second by Jordan Hugill just before the break, gave Preston the victory.
  • Rotherham’s remarkable revival under Neil Warnock continued, as they beat his old club Leeds United 2-1 thanks to a Greg Halford penalty, the concession of which resulted in Leeds keeper Marco Silvestri being sent off. That brought both teams down to ten men, after Matt Derbyshire had previously been dismissed for the Millers. Fulham moved four points clear of trouble in a huge relegation clash against MK Dons, a 2-1 win for the Cottagers giving them some breathing room above their opponents.
  • At the Valley, Charlton fans launched another protest against chairman Roland Duchâtalet – literally, stopping the game in the first few minutes by throwing a large number of stress balls onto the pitch. The game against Birmingham, when it restarted, ended 2-1 when Jorge Teixeira scored a late, late winner to give the Addicks a sniff of survival. Bolton are surely doomed after a 1-0 defeat to Reading left them 15 points adrift of safety.

League One

  • There are new leaders of League One, after Wigan jumped above Burton Albion following their emphatic 5-1 win away to Shrewsbury Town, Will Grigg scoring two of them. It could’ve been worse for Nigel Clough’s Burton, who were down to ten men and trailing Bury until the 93rd minute, when loanee Tyler Walker equalised on his debut to grab a 1-1 draw.
  • In the playoff places, Bradford closed the gap on Walsall (who lost 2-0 to Sheffield United) and Gillingham (who didn’t play) as they secured a narrow 1-0 win over Scunthorpe United, Steven Davies scoring the only goal.
  • At the bottom of the table, Doncaster were seconds away from their first win in 16 games, but an injury-time equaliser from Niall Canavan snatched the victory away from them, Rochdale grabbing a 2-2 draw at the very last.
  • Blackpool eased clear of the relegation zone with a 2-0 victory over Southend, but Fleetwood couldn’t take advantage of Oldham being out of action, only drawing at Swindon. Crewe, who have looked nailed on for relegation for a while, lost 3-0 at Peterborough while Colchester, likely to join them in League Two, drew 0-0 with Millwall.

League Two

  • Northampton could have sealed promotion to League One if results had gone their way, but they will have to wait before they can celebrate after they were held to a 2-2 draw by Notts County. Jon Stead scored a penalty for the struggling Magpies, but a Ricky Holmes brace at least salvaged a point, so the Cobblers will have to wait to secure their inevitable elevation.
  • Second-placed Oxford United were out of action – they play Barnsley in the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy final on Sunday – but there are now three teams on 71 points just below them. Bristol Rovers hopped into the automatic promotion spots on goal difference, thanks to their 3-0 win over Crawley Town, while Plymouth Argyle threw away a lead in the last ten minutes against Exeter, who won 2-1 through an Ollie Watkins brace, and Accrington Stanley drew 1-1 with Cambridge.
  • Leyton Orient missed a chance to move into the play-off spots by drawing 1-1 with York City, remaining behind Wycombe Wanderers who were beaten 2-1 by Wimbledon.
  • At the bottom of the table, the bottom two look set in stone, with York and Dagenham & Redbridge nine and 13 points from safety respectively. The latter were not in action, facing Morecambe (who beat Barnet 4-2) on Tuesday.
